What the world needs now is love, sweet love. It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of… We at the Neighborhood Gallery Arts Center (NGAC) in Atlanta home of the “Heritage Garden” are prone to agree, unless, of course, love is in a race against flowers. We believe the world needs more love, but it also boasts a huge deficit in flowers. Urban centers are especially depleted of the colorful botanicals that oftentimes provide food for the soul. Yet flowers, herbs, and other foliage have inspired writers, poets, artists, and scholars since the dawn of time.
The Heritage Garden is an urban community based project that will use art as a back drop to provide youth and adults with instructions in horticulture as it relates to the American heritage, nutrition and health while introducing the concept of “green.” Our Heritage Garden project will be led and monitored by avid gardeners Dr. Linda Rochell Lane (artist and historian) and NGAC owner Dennis Ruffin Sr. NGAC as well as utilize its vast store of educators and artists, board members, involve other community volunteers, and partner with local garden clubs. Gardens provide fodder for the soul of youth as well as adults. Our Fine Arts summer campers will assist in maintaining and upgrading the garden during the summer two days a week.
Heritage Garden will provide opportunities to create a medium for nature inspired art projects; offer health awareness with nutritional classes and exercise; share the American heritage; create a soothing urban environment for residents provide a sample lawn and garden for small urban spaces and foster a stronger sense of community. The Neighborhood Gallery Arts Center “family” is extremely grateful to our sponsors FISKARS for believing in us and supporting our efforts. Through the “Orange Thumb” grant award.
