Here at Touch the Earth in Cherokee County, GA we have had a great experience. With the help of Fiskars we have truely touch more than the earth. Times are tough everywhere and it was a good way to reach out into our community and offer more than just support. With the help of everyone we were able to help those in tough times providing them with time well spent with their kids as well as helping them have fresh vegatables(this is some thing they would not have had). The YMCA is a community based organization but Fiskars helped us even more than we can help ourselves. We are hoping to get donations to continue serving our community through the winter as we have a longer growing season than most. But without a doubt make sure you Touch the Earth Everyday because you don't know who you could be touching.
Hey everybody,
We have started to produce the fruits of our labor! The squash and tomatoes are coming in abundance. The herbs are doing there job in helping us keep out the bugs. The children at our day camp which numbers about 600 a week have been weeding and watering. It looks great! I had some old benchs at my house and they have been put in there for and inviting feel. We have a compost that much of our staff is helping maintain, so when we need some fertilizer we just put the compost on the plants. I don't think I could be more happy with the way things are going. I will take a few pictures so everyone can see the beauty in Touch the Earth.
Hey everyone,
Welcome to Hotlanta! We have been enduring a n early heat wave, with temperatures of 95 plus for over a week. Adam has got our water going and the weeds are in full swing. We spent some time weedingand beautifing. The tomatoes are in full swing and the squash looks tasty. Our biigest problem and mostly my fault was our friends the deer. I plantted several hostas in the back of the garden due to shade... only to read later that this is one of there most favorite treats.(HGTV told me this after it was too late) They took off the tops of most of the peepers but i think they will recover. Otherwise we have been mulching to make it look pretty. Thanks for whoever checks on us and remember toi Touch the Earth gently!

Last week we had a wonderful day of soaking rain. This of course was the day that American Heritage Academy was schedule to come and help plant. Thank God that kids love the rain. They moved most of the dirt and planted all the plants without complaining once. This group of 6th graders is special to me because they came and did MY first outdoor education retreat. They had fun and loved the t-shirts. The garden is mostly complete at this piont. We are going to move mulch to fill in the dirt. We are in the phase of making it look pretty. Touch the Earth and enjoy the rain!
Hey,
We are been enjoying beautiful gardening weather. We had dirt delivered and are busy tring to get our beds filled up. The process is slow and quite frankly back breaking. Ronnie's boys came out and filled one of our beds. The Women of Woodstock were very helpful in getting plants planted. We now have our tomatoes planted as well as our viney vegatables. Thanks for the help. Adam our property manager will be getting us a water supply line some time this week. We are working very hard to beat the heat in Hotlanta. don't forget to Touch the Earth!
We have been creating plans and making them happen. We had some adjudicated youth come out to help with our big plans. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon we layed all the landscape timber and some of the pavers stones for the walk way. We got a deal on them because some of them had minor flaws. If you don't remember we are building raised beds. We are having 6000 pounds of dirt delivered tomorrow and will have the Women of Woodstock come out and help us move this stuff. It will be mostly topsoil with a mix of compost and manure. We have both a compost and manure on our propery. So far no snags and lots of progress. Happy Gardening!
Hey Y'all! Welcome to "Touch the Earth" garden. The garden is placed on 225 acres just north of Atlanta at the Cherokee Outdoor YMCA. The dream started with a thought and is going to be reality with help. We named the garden "Touch the Earth" because we feel you should do it gently. This is in relation to "Leave only Footprints Behind" while hiking. We have started grading the land to build our raised beds. The purpose of the garden is to bring a sense of community to all that come to the YMCA. We have over 10,000 people that come and visit us throughout the year and want them to find a community among many. We our hoping that "Touch the Earth" will bring them together.
